If you are having trouble finding a publisher for your manuscript, then you should probably consider the self-publishing route. Self-publishing has many benefits such as higher margins, control over sales, and involvement in every step of the process. However, there are some pitfalls that self-publishers should be aware of.

The most common pitfall is printing too few books, which results in a higher cost per book. Everyone knows that the more you make or do of something, the lower the cost is per unit. Instead of printing 500 books, print 1,000. This will also help with your marketing budget. If you pay $2.00 per book for 500 copies and $1.00 per book for 1,000 copies, then you will be able to spend more on marketing per book by printing 1,000 copies.

Another common pitfall for self-publishers is not creating and utilizing an effective marketing plan. Ok, so youve printed all these books but they are just sitting there collecting dust. What good does that do you? Some people complain saying that they dont have a creative bone in their body. Well, to get started, look at TV. Thats right, look at TV. See what other companies and brands are doing to advertise or promote their product or service and try to replicate it but add a new element or twist to it.

The last pitfall I am going to discuss in this article is not following industry standards. Industry standards require that most books have an ISBN on the back of the book and on the copyright page, a UPC on the back of the book, and a spine. By having these key elements, your book will meet the minimum requirements established by many wholesalers and distributors. These are just a few pitfalls that self-publishers make.
